About Me
In the media...My pictures of BASE jumping have featured prominently of late across the broadsheets (Daily Mail, The Times, Daily Express, Daily Telegraph, even The Sun!). More detail to be found in Project BASE and in my Journal section - and in online news outlets...

Adventurer Scientist
I am a cognitive scientist, Chartered Psychologist, and adventurer, with over 20 years of experience applying experimental psychology methods to understand how human behaviour is dependent on environmental context. This includes working in the consumer goods sector (as a consumer psychologist), and with multiple world class academic institutions on a range of applied real world questions. I currently work with extreme sports athletes to understand how certain individuals perform 'at the edge', and to apply these insights to help people achieve optimal performance in daily life.
I am a lifelong traveller and adventure pursuits advocate, and have been priveleged to have many adventurous experiences around the world: from Arctic to the desert, mountains and jungle. I have climbed in the Alps, skiied in Greenland, rafted in Central America, and dived all over the world, from the frigid waters of Svalbard to the dragon-infested lands of Indonesia!
As an 'Adventure Psychologist' and Optimal Performance researcher I seek to help individuals and organisations understand how to get the most out of life and work using principles from cutting edge cognitive science. This includes devising ways to measure behaviour in different contexts, and to understand and communicate how the environment shapes (and can itself be shaped to facilitate) responses, emotions and focus on tasks and goals.
This may encompass using lessons learnt from extreme performers to help make important decisions, be that in setting new goals in life, or making investments associated with risk. Or designing tailored experiences using nature/wilderness based settings, or even Virtual Reality, to stimulate a new mindset, disrupt and change existing behaviour patterns. I give talks on these subjects, to corporate organisations, academic institutions, and to public audiences interested in adventure pursuits.
The CognitvExplorer is the persona that epitomises the combination of perception and exploration. I seek to inspire others as to the inestimable benefits of adopting an adventurous mindset, be that in terms of getting out in the wild to help pursue loftier goals, or simply to perform more efficiently in daily life with an enriched perception of the world 'out there'.

Rationale
I am fascinated by the interplay of environment and participant, particularly with respect to adventure pursuits that present opportunities for the individual to confront 'extremes' and aspire to greater levels of self-development. I seek to capture elements of that in my photography, and in support of my grander ambitions to fathom out what makes the brain 'tick'. I am priveleged to be involved with extreme sports practitioners who are pushing the envelope of BASE jumping in the UK, and strive to capture and document this progress in my photography, writings, and scientific research. This I do in conjunction with MountainManBASE - Extreme Action Media platform with exciting developments ongoing.
As a scientist I explore how the marvel that is the brain, controls the tools of perception and action, and how these processes may be disrupted or enhanced by exposure to nature and wilderness experiences. This understanding can generate principles to help enhance motivation, wellbeing and resilience to the stresses of life. The message from this is that adventurous activities and exposure to nature can enhance cognitive functioning and personal growth.
